Canadian job vacancies reached 435,000 in first three months of 2019

Canada’s private sector job vacancy rate reached another record in the first three months of 2019 with the highest number of unfilled jobs reported in Quebec, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says in a new update.

The federation reports a total of 435,000 jobs sat vacant for at least four months across Canada during the first quarter of 2019, which amounted to a job vacancy rate of 3.3 per cent.

“The national vacancy rate has been steadily climbing for the past two years and it reached another record high last quarter,” said Ted Mallet, vice-president and chief economist of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).

The CFIB says labour shortages affected skilled positions more than semi- or unskilled occupations.

The shortages were also putting “strong pressure” on wage levels, with employers who had at least one vacant position saying they expected to raise wages.

The CFIB says the job vacancy rate is slowing relative to this same time in 2018 but labour shortages remain a challenge for employers, especially in Quebec, British Columbia and Ontario.

British Columbia invites 234 Express Entry BC and Skills Immigration candidates in May 21 draw

A new draw by the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program held May 21 issued 234 invitations to apply for a provincial nomination for Canadian permanent residence to immigration candidates in five Skills Immigration and Express Entry B.C. categories.

An unspecified number of Skills Immigration candidates in the Skilled Worker, International Graduate and Entry Level and Semi-Skilled categories received invitations. An undisclosed number of candidates in the Express Entry B.C. (EEBC) Skilled Worker and International Graduate categories were also invited.

EEBC categories are open to immigration candidates with a profile in the federal Express Entry system, which manages the pool of candidates for Canada’s Federal Skilled Worker Class, Federal Skilled Trades Class and Canadian Experience Class economic immigration categories.

An additional 600 points is added to Express Entry candidates’ Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score after they are approved for a nomination.

Skills Immigration candidates who receive a nomination will have their Canadian permanent residence applications processed outside the federal Express Entry system.

Foreign nationals who would like to be considered through either the Skills Immigration or EEBC streams have to first register an online profile with the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) through the Skills Immigration Registration System (SIRS).

SIRS is a points-based system used by the BC PNP to evaluate candidates based on factors like education, work experience and proficiency in English or French.

An indeterminate, full-time job offer with an employer in B.C. is a key eligibility factor for most Skills Immigration and Express Entry BC immigration categories.
